Winter is coming. Ned Stark doesn’t kid. When winter comes, it whooshes down all hands on deck and teaches us why we love summers. Winter jackets become a delight and a headache to buy. There are way too many options and very less information about how you should tell one from the better one. There’s a whole lot of jargon that gets thrown around like goose down, Sherpa, DWR etc. And you go around the block and buy the first jacket that looks fancy. So we took it upon ourselves to make a list of the best winter jackets for men. This winter, you won’t be alone! We have also written a complete guide about best rain jackets.
What are the key jacket terms I should know?
Sandstone Duck: Sandstone duck is a variant of the cotton duck material which is a tightly woven cotton fabric, it is also used on some of the best sleeping bags. Sandstone duck is pre-washed so that it feels softer and comfortable. On the contrary, usual firm cotton duck feels rigid. Such material tends to rise up when you raise your shoulders.
Down Feather: Down of a bird is the sheet of pristine feathers found under their outermost layer of feathers. This is optimum for insulatingwinter jackets. Most jackets use goose down or duck down. Younger birds are covered all over with this good-quality feather.
Fill Power: Fill power indicates the quality of down. For a given weight, a higher fill power provides more insulation. It indicates the insulation capability per ounce of the down.
Storm cuff: Storm cuff is an inner elastic cuff that cuts off rain or moist air from getting in through the sleeves.
Double Storm flap: Storm flaps sheath zippers or buttoned openings against weather. These flaps envelope the zipper from inside and outside and keep the rain out.
Identifying, reviewing and ranking the best winter jackets for men – Our methodology
After considering a number of factors, we picked up 10 winter jackets that men must give a try. They were selected based on a wide array of criteria, the most important of which, are:
Warmth: Because that’s the whole point of a jacket. Jackets were differentiated based on warmth-by-weight ratio. Some jackets tend to be really warm but that adds to their bulk. The best winter jackets either use high fill-power down or innovate with Polyester. Most of them have Nylon or cotton shells.
Weather-management: The warmth of a jacket should not be compromised by wind or rain. The best winter jackets come equipped with weather-proof shells. They might also have weather-resisting measures like storm cuffs and hip drawstring.
Quality vs price: The quality-to-price trade-off is more important than these factors standing alone. Each customer may have a different budget. Our aim is that they get the best for their money, whatever the amount be. Durability of material and reliability of buttons, stitches and zippers were taken into account.
Style: Winter jackets are garments, after all. If they don’t look good on you, they defeat a major purpose. Our aim was to pick the best winter jackets that can balance warmth and fashion
Convenience: Every extra feature like detachable shell, hand-warming pockets, interior Napoleon pockets, neck gaiter etc. makes a difference to the winter jacket’s street cred.

When we say warm, we mean warm: this will get hot quickly if you are wearing it in light weather, such as in spring or early fall. Its snug fit allows for plenty of mobility, making it suitable for outdoor sports such as skiing, camping, hiking, running and workouts.
The 4How is touted as a ‘relaxed fit’, but we felt that the jacket was more form fitting, and should look best with slim and athletic body types. The hem features a cinch cord with hook and loop closure, while the elastic sleeves have adjustable Velcro cuff tabs to keep the cold out. Two zippered hand pockets on the front keep hands warm, in addition to a zippered chest pocket for cards and ID, as well as an internal pocket for storing smartphones or an iPod. Meanwhile, the hood provides protection for the face and is detachable.
Sizes are limited, as the jacket only goes from Medium to 2XL. As a guide, the M size works for those with a chest measurement between 38 to 40 inches. There are only two colours to choose from, namely blue or black.
The 4How is good at heat retention, owing to its soft, thick fleece liner, which also gives the jacket an expensive, upscale look. As a rain jacket, the 4How performs equally well, thanks to the quick dry, durable polyester material. The hood, although not fleece lined, is warm, windproof and moisture resistant.
Meanwhile, the outer shell is made from 100% polyester and treated with a shell fabric dyeing technology, designed to keep colours long lasting and bright. For double protection against the elements, secure the front of the jacket with a double layer of zipper and buttons.
