Features you will get in Osprey backpacks
You will find many kinds of bags from Osprey; but there can’t be one single backpack for all as different individuals have different requirements. The requirement of a weekend traveler will be different from a traveler who is on 5 months trip through a continent. This is why it is important to look for features that suit your travel style. Let’s go through the list that will enable you to decide what works best for you.
- Waist strap – It distributes the weight around the whole body from your shoulders. It is very important for people who travel frequently to avoid back pain and sore shoulders.
- Front-loading – Most of the backpacks we commonly see in the market are top-loading in which you just pull the drawstring to close it from the top. Though it is not really a bad feature, but it does make the job of searching through the bag difficult and you have to take out everything if you want to take out something from the bag which you had kept at the bottom. To counter this problem, the bags with clamshell structure are designed which allows you to open your bag from the bottom and you can easily reach your bottom stuff.
- Rain resistance – It can be really helpful feature especially if you are traveling in a place where high precipitation is an issue. Also, it would be perfect for the times when weather is unpredictable.
- Laptop compartment – Some bags also come with a separate padded division that keeps your gadgets safe. You can also use this compartment for keeping books or any other thing that can be destroyed easily.
- Carry – on size – Though the feature is not necessary, but it can save you a lot of time and fuss when you are taking a flight by avoiding extra fee for luggage.
- Zippers – Look for bags that have zippers that can be locked. It is usable for the time when you are not with your bag.
Size is one of the most important aspects you would be considering when you buy a backpack. So before deciding anything, consider the size that you should be carrying with you. Mostly backpacks are measured in liters. There are ranges of sizes available which is why we have categorized them so that you can figure out the usage of the particular size of the bag.
- 15-30 l
it is good for weekend trip and can be an amazing minimalistic backpack. However, the size is too small and will suit only if you carry very less stuff with you. More or less, it is like a daily usable backpack or commuter bag.
- 40-45 l
it is good for small trips that last for one to few weeks, or even months if you want carry light. It is usable in summers when you don’t have to carry too much clothes with you and is totally acceptable as carry- on luggage, which saves you lot of time on airports.
- 50-65 l
if you want to carry some extra stuff with you, then small bags won’t do. This size is suitable for people who always want some extra space for extra stuff that they might or might not need during their trip. It is good for winter season travelling when you have to stuff extra clothing with you. You can also store sleeping bags and tents in this when you are heading for camping. It is bit heavier but considering the usage, it is something that can carry a lot of your extra stuff.
- 70-120 l
this comes with internal support which makes it very heavy to carry even without the luggage. So, we would recommend this to only hardcore camping people or trekkers who need the extra support and sturdy bags. Otherwise, for normal trips, it would be too heavy.

Hiking and Travel Backpacks
The hiking backpacks are better than travel backpacks in terms of comfort because their construction is done in a way that make it wearable for longer period. Normally, hiking bags have a more innovative hip belt and shoulder belt. The bag is designed in a way that it hugs the body closely. However, these bags are not practical for travelling but still some people prefer to take it with them for the comfort that it offers.
Although hiking bags are more comfortable but even some travel bags come with those features of comfort like hip belts and shoulder harnesses.
Mostly travel backpacks are available in one size and are also unisex. Though it is not a problem but there are some backpacks that are also available in small, medium and large size which is mostly beneficial for people who are too short or tall than average people. So, if you want a comfortable size, it is better to look for bags that are available in different sizes.
Gender specific travel backpacks
Another feature that a few companies offer are gender specific backpacks or you could say that they design female and male specific designs which fit the shoulder strap according to the anatomy of the wearer. It does not mean that unisex backpacks are any less comfortable, so you don’t have to worry much about this aspect.

The backpack is a big stride in terms of support and padding from a superlight design such as REI’s Flash series. The minimalist cushioning and thin frame sheet on the hip belt and shoulder strap distribute the weight evenly. It adjusts nicely to the load of rain shell, water and food. However, it won’t take the extra load of water bottles, as the padding on the hip belt droop and make it little uncomfortable.

Osprey is one of the best in terms of ventilation design. The entire back side and the hip belt are provided with mesh and have sufficient space to create some airflow. We love how this backpack distributes the weight along your back making you feel less burdened under the packing of your backpack. We can say that you sore shoulders won’t be a concern anymore. It is a combination of 15L daypack and 40L backpack. It is a two in one system that can even be used separately. We love the versatility of the bags due to its different usage. When you reach a hotel, all you have to do is put the bag flat down and go all the way when unzipping. Everything will be accessible and you won’t need to dig around the stuff you kept at bottom. This front loading feature is great for people who end up taking too much stuff with them or can’t remember which stuff went where. The weight is not too much, the walls do not stand up when it is empty but it is convenient for travel purpose. It is not huge and this makes it great backpack for almost everything. It is a medium size companion that you can take anywhere.
Design and Comfort
The daypack consists of a padded laptop sleeve that can easily fit at least 13 inches laptop. The outer has two mesh compartments and four other compartments of different sizes that make the categorization of your stuff neat and simple. The zippers are provided with rings that allow you to lock your stuff and keep your luggage safe when you are travelling. A mesh compartment in the main bag is meant for keeping loose items. It is also provided with an internal compression straps that help you tighten the stuff inside.
If you don’t want the detachable daypack you can buy Farpoint 40 which is basically the main travel bag. It will cost you less.
The backpack comes with an amazing suspension system which makes it comfortable even when you are going for long walks. The padding at the shoulder straps is good and you can adjust it easily. The back side is also padded and provides an extra cushioning and lumbar support. The hip belt is also padded which is nice as it takes off the burden off your shoulders and regulate it towards your hip, so that you can feel even distribution.
Although all the features are great but it would have been nice if they would have provided small pocket with the main 40L backpack too. There is just one large mesh pocket which does not seems enough when you are using it without the daypack.
- Compact enough to clear airline check points
- Lightweight but strong nylon material
- Detachable daypack
- Versatile usage

4. Osprey Packs Daylite Daypack
This daypack model from Osprey is one of the lightest and smallest in their range. It is designed for a day when you go out for some sport or strolls in the cities while your travel and explore a new world. Osprey not only maintains the quality of its materials and design but also has significantly reduced the size and the number of pockets to make it extremely lightweight backpack.
The backpack is adjustable and padded lightly while the shoulder straps and sternum and hip straps are useful in alignment of the load on your shoulders and reduce the weight. Although, the padding on the back and shoulder is very light, it is enough considering the size of the backpack. Also, the mesh material is covering the backpack which allows you to remain dry when you are travelling or hiking. There is a slot for a hydration pack behind the back padding.
Design and Comfort
The zip goes all the way to half of the bag. The two sections of front big area of your gear and an elastic back slot for gadgets like tablet, laptop or even things like important documents is provided. The second section can also be used for the hydration pack. The front has pocket with about 1/3rd of the length for small things. Osprey’s love for mesh pockets is quite visible in this backpack as they have also included two elastic and wide pockets with a key holder and storage space for some other things in front of it. You can easily place your keys on the hanger without losing them in your bag; fit a wallet, a big phone and any other small stuff like cards, tool or GPS etc.
There are two decent sized elastic mesh pockets on the sides that is meant to keep your water bottles within the reach of your hand. However, we would recommend strapping you water bottles (especially big ones), as the bottles tends to slip out of those pockets. You can use compression pockets provided just above the pockets. These compression straps are meant to hold the extra stuff on the pack or keep the secure in the side pockets.
Another advantage of using this daypack is that it is can be used with any add on compatible pack from Osprey. There are many back pack series from Osprey that is compatible with this pack. Some of them are Shuttle series, Ace 75, Volt or Viva Series and Aether or Ariel Series.

The Porter 30 comes in four different color choices – Diablo Red, Mineral Teal, Castle Grey, and Black. The Porter 30 backpack is easy to move.
Design and Comfort
The height is adjustable and it comes with chest straps and hip belt that is nicely padded to make travelling comfortable and secure. However, the back plate is not really great as it just simple padded material lying flat. So if you wear this bag in warmer climate, this bag is not really comfortable. It will make you sweat.
Now if you look at storage capacity of this bag, this bag can expand really well. So you will need to be mindful while packing this backpack. Always keep heavy stuff low and to the back side of the backpack. Another way this bag can be carried is ‘carry on’ method. You can zip the shoulder strap and hip belt can be pushed inside a slot on both sides leaving the back side smooth. You won’t have problem of straps getting caught in other people’s luggage or armrests in a train or airplane. You can easily get rid of the unnecessary appendages when required. This feature makes this an awesome choice especially as a ‘carry on’ backpack.
The backpack feels great even when you are carrying a lot of load as you can grab handles that do not pinch your hand. You can also carry this bag as duffel bag by simply attaching the shoulder strap to the D – rings provided on the sides of the bag. Though keep in mind that shoulder straps are not the part of the deal, you will have to buy it separately.

6. Osprey Packs Escapist 32 Daypack
Though Escapist is categorized a biking backpack, we consider it much more versatile than just a biking backpack. It is a great pick for people who are looking for a bag that serves all kind of functions. We won’t say that this bag is perfect but it is not very far from being either. This backpack is available in three sizes. The two larger ones have more or less same features with only difference in their storage capacity and sizes. You will see some features absent in the smaller version. The backpacks, large or small are great for the daily commute, hiking and for biking. However, if you are someone who loves to carry a lot of stuff with you, the smaller 18L version might seem insufficient. But it can be a good choice if you are actually looking for something compact and small backpack for biking as it won’t slow down your pace like other larger ones.
Design and Comfort
Osprey means high quality premium stuff that can stand the toughest of times and the torture you put on your bag. Both the accents and the body are made of Nylon. It makes the back durable and water resistant. In addition, the Escapist is integrated with 630D Nylon, which is an extremely thick fabric that does not fall apart easily. This makes it an exceptionally durable bag, and you will be using for years. Another great feature of the backpack is the AirScape back panel. The foam padding is evenly spaced in the ridges that enable you to breathe even when it is hot and sweaty. The padding feels soft and comfortable as it provides support even when the backpack is fully loaded. The mesh covers the entire back panel and improves its ventilation.
Biostretch is the Osprey’s proprietary innovation and is used in some of their best backpacks. It comprises the EVA foam which is perforated to improve its stretch, breathability and comfort. On the top of it is spacer mesh that wraps up its corners and makes the surface even more breathable. The hip belt comes very convenient especially when you carrying heavy load. It transfers the load on your shoulders to hips. Also note that the hip belt in 18L version does not feature Biostretch ventilation. However, you still get the ventilated padding. The backpack is unisex and fir nicely on almost all kind of people and genders.

- Easy accessible shoulder strap pockets
- Water bottle secure side pockets
- Helmet attachments

7. Osprey Packs Fairview 55 Women’s Travel Backpack
Although there is not much difference in Fairpoint and Fairview series, the former is more focused on the men anatomy while the later is more inclined to the women. It comes with women’s specific features and harnesses. Keep in mind that these bags are too large for carry on if you are travelling worldwide, so it might not clear the check point on some airlines. It comes in three storage capacities 40L (without daypack), 70L and 55L. Most of the women prefer to go for 55L as it seems not too small or large. It is available in grey/red and grey/green colors. The two S/M and M/L sizes are available that fit most of the people perfectly.
Design and Comfort
The main compartment is like a suitcase that has a large and zippered opening that can be pad locked. In the inner side, the two compression straps are provided with a large mesh pocket to which is attached a zipper flap. On the outer, two padded handles allows you to carry the bag like a suitcase. On the back side, the hip belts are ergonomically shaped enables the distribution of weight. In addition, there is a spacer mesh chest strap which makes it easy for you to customize your bag to shape of your body.
Again, the best thing about Osprey backpacks is that hip belt and other straps can be tucked away in small panel when you are checking in on airline. A 13L daypack that comes with it can be zipped on the main bag or clipped onto the harness straps on front. It makes it really useful for carrying laptop or important stuff like documents or passport. The daypack also comes with a small front facing pocket where you can stash your phone or sunglasses, a laptop sleeve, two mesh side pockets and a mesh tablet sleeve.

8. Osprey Packs Stratos 24 Men’s Hiking Backpack
In terms of comfort in carrying this bag, it is as good as it gets in the daypack series. It is significantly shrunken down into a compact backpacking model. It offers maximum load capacity of 25 pounds and makes it a really good overnight bag. The mesh back panel adapts nicely to your back while the metal frame works in pushing the weight on your hips. The suspended back panel and solid structure ensures that there is no drooping when the load is heavy. However, the metal structure also makes the bag a bit heavy. The weight of the backpack is around 2 pounds 12.1 ounces which means it is one of the heaviest daypacks that Osprey offer in the 20L capacities. Though we won’t consider it something bad because the metal structure does allow the even distribution of weight and even if it is heavy, you won’t feel the weight.
Stratos also uses a mesh back panel allowing airflow to keep you dry. It is quite efficient and it is very unique and rare feature that can create a much efficient airflow. However, the ventilation cuts into the main compartment storage capacity and makes it hard to compress making it too rigid to roll. Nevertheless, it a good feature if you are taking this backpack to summer hiking or long trails.
Design and Comfort
Another strong suit of this series is the organizational comfort as you get an ample of sleeves and pockets. There is a internal hydration pocket and an exit port, two zippered pockets on the hip belt, and two side mesh pockets for water bottle storage. Stratos offer easy access to the small things you need when travelling without having to go through any fuss.

The backpack is highly functional and can be even used for school or camping trips. The padded sleeve for laptop lies in the back side of the main compartment so that you can easily reach it. The downside to this sleeve is that there is no zipper or strap provided with it to keep it in place. Also, you can only fit about 14 inches of laptop, anything more than that won’t fit.
Design and Comfort
The featured front bungee compression system allows this backpack to work like convertible backpack. This system allows the bag to be stretched enough to fit even heavy books, hiking gear and a helmet. The straps on the lower part allow you to have more storage space. But that is not it! While some people prefer it for hiking, some also use it for daily commuting. The best thing about this bag which is very rare in daypacks is the laptop sleeve that can accommodate even a 15 inches laptop. The hip belt and the back side of the pack are well padded and is provided with mesh for extra ventilation. Even the shoulder straps are padded sufficiently with cut outs on padding to minimize the weight. However, some users felt that the bag put a pressure on the back when it is full. It would have been better if Osprey had considered putting suspended mesh back system in this one too.
Design and Comfort
The main compartment has a small mesh pocket on the inside with a key clip for keeping your essentials. Also, there is a separate pouch on the top that allows quick access. There is a rain cover that can be stored in a pouch at the bottom of the bag, compression straps on both sides and top, an ice axe holder loop with a bungee cord, and many small pockets and sleeves. The bag is 41 ounces which is quite heavy as compared to other backpacks. The metal frame adds to this weight and makes this bag more stable and durable.
There are mixed views on the adjustability of this bag. It is available in only one size but it is provided with the adjustable straps so that you can easily adjust according to your height. However, users feel disappointed when it comes to hip belt adjustability. It did not fit properly on people with hip larger than size 4. The most impressive feature of Sirrus is its durability. It is made up of 210 D nylon body and 420 D panel on the bottom for extra durability as this area is prone to most of the damage.
In case you get a defective product or there is a structural damage to the bag by accident, Osprey will repair or replace the bag for you. This multi usage of this bag makes it a good choice for people who travel a lot. It works best for people living in wet climate. In case of heavy rain, rain cover is there to protect your bag. All in all, it is a comfortable and spacious daypack that is designed amazingly for good airflow without sacrificing on the support. Although, this model miss points on the hip belt, but for some it can be a perfect fit. We suggest trying it out, if doesn’t fit, you can always send it back.
- Ample storage
- Amazing support through straps
- Good circulation of air
- Side pockets hold the water bottles securely
- Really bad hip belt adjustment

This is another one from Talon series. If you will like this backpack or not depends entirely on your preferences. For some people it is perfect while for others it is not as good as others. You will definitely love this you are ultra light traveler, or if you are looking for a durable backpack that allows you to be comfortable in hot weather. Also, if you don’t want to go through the check in on the airport, then this can save a lot of your time. Other features like attachments for trekking pole, ice axe; compression straps; hip belt with pockets and a top lid makes this bag extremely versatile in usage. It is a multipurpose bag and with a guarantee of life time companionship. It is not going to wear down unless you just decide to throw it in the fire. Like other Osprey backpacks, this one also offers adjustable hip belt which is padded with mesh for perforation and provides ventilation. There is no metal frame on the back which is left out to reduce the weight of the backpack. However, this means you cannot use this backpack for heavy load.
Another really simple yet useful feature is sternum strap with an emergency whistle, which keeps the shoulder straps in comfortable position. Exterior straps allow hikers to minimize the burden and feel lightweight while hiking. Additional advantage of strap is that you can carry some extra gear outside of your backpack; it could be water bottle, tri-pod or even sleeping pad. 15. Osprey Packs Eja 48 Women’s Backpacking Backpack
Eja is one of the minimalist bags of the Ospreys. The alloy frame of the backpack ensures that it remains stable in all kind of conditions. Good thing is that it is not considered a heavy weight even with the alloy frame taking up some weight of the bag. The AirSpace mesh back panel fits perfectly on the body of the wearer and provides support and ventilation. Exoform, which is a thick padding provided on the shoulder straps fall exactly where there should without putting any extra burden or strain or friction on the shoulders or neck. The sternum straps allow full customization that can make the backpack really adjustable. This feature is important as the design is women specific and there are lots of different sizes of women that wear this bag. It is essential that it hugs everybody just right with little customization. However, Osprey does lack progress on hip belts on many of its women specific bags. In this model too, we felt that hip belt was not as good as it should be. The back panel is non-padded, even at the bottom, and the hip belt do not offer much cushioning either.
Design and Comfort
The nylon construction not only makes this bag durable but also makes it ultra light. If you want make this backpack even lighter, you can remove the lid on the top and use the FlapJacket to cover the upper part. Further, even compression and other extra straps can be removed too.
The design is a simple one, top-loading main compartment that comes with an internal hydration sleeve. On the outside, there are three external pockets that allow you to keep some stuff accessible in the time of need. To make this backpack lighter, Osprey has removed the pockets on shoulder strap and hip belts which can be a bit of disappointment for people who love to have pockets for convenience in reaching out to their stuff.
Thankfully, they have retained many attachment points such as attachment for helmet, shoes or other heavy items. Also, the side compression straps are removable which makes things a lot easier for you when you are hiking.
This backpack is perfectly ventilated, lightweight yet durable and comes with a lot of features that even some of the negative points do not matter much considering the whole amazing package.
- Decent organizational features
- Suspended mesh back panel
- Dual mesh foam padding for extra ventilation
- Not meant for heavy load
- No pockets on shoulder straps and hip belt
